Octamar™ Technology

Improve Fleet Performance

In slow steaming, the engine operates at lower speeds, resulting in lower temperatures and pressure in the combustion chamber.  With the lower combustion pressure, the fuel will experience ignition delay, ineffective and incomplete combustion, and can result in a higher SFOC because the engine is not operating at its optimal efficiency.  The longer the ignition delay, the more fuel will have been injected and vaporized during the pre-mixed phase.

Innospec has provided Octamar™, a combustion improver and catalyst to the marine industry, which in slow steaming applications has been demonstrated to provide significant benefits to the end users, reported as follows:

  • Improves ignition and combustion across the engine load range
  • Optimizes SFOC between recommended engine overhaul intervals
  • Reduces soot deposits, particulate emissions, and black smoke emitted from the exhaust stack
  • Reduces frequency and duration of turbocharger and exhaust gas economizer washing by 50%
  • Achieves optimal heat transfer and steam generation

Octamar™ Technology – Enhance CII Rating

Octamar™ helps your fleet stay ahead of the game with up to 3.9% improvement in fuel economy.

Our range of combustion catalyst products are helping to support fleets around the world with many vessels already including our solution in their SEEMP Part III and have implemented our solution to achieve their CII goals.

Innospec’s Octamar™  Technology is the most cost-effective and simple solution for CII;

  • No downtime
  • No maintenance of additional machinery/systems
  • Fuel chemicals have no CAPEX (Capital Expenditure)
  • More attractive to older vessels
  • Fuel savings between 2.1% – 3.9% (verified by ClassNK and CIMAC)
  • Patented Combustion Technology

The performance of Innospec’s Octamar™ range of combustion catalysts, which includes Octamar™ Ultra HF, Octamar™ Complete, and Octamar™ F35C, has been recognized by the leading ship classification society ClassNK.  In eight separate field trials, Octamar™ achieved an average fuel economy improvement of 2.7% and reduced Particulate Matter (PM) emissions by up to 60%.  Innospec is the first fuel chemistry supplier to be awarded this endorsement.

OCTAMAR™ TECHNOLOGY – ENHANCE CII RATING

The fuel bunkered is not all turned into useful energy that then goes on to produce CO2.  Fuel lost as sludge, left uncaptured or lost in the exhaust is not used but counts are fuel consumption for the CII.

Octamar™ Complete and Octamar™ Ultra HF are multi-functional products for HSHFO and VLSFO respectively, that assist the fuel to burn better in the engine, stabilize the fuel during storage and transfer.

Octamar™ Complete, Ultra HF and F35C are patented combustion/soot catalyst technology for residual and hybrid fuel.  Benefits include:

  • Ensures maximum burnout of hydrocarbon & improves fuel economy
  • Reduces ignition delay of fuel therefore improves combustion
  • Disperse soot, reduces unburned carbon deposits in exhaust system, maintains turbocharger and economizer cleanliness and efficiency
  • Significantly reduces Particulate Matter (PM) and reduces pollution of environment

The dispersant – stabilizer in Octamar™ Ultra HF and Octamar™ Complete offer proven results:

  • Reduces risk of incompatibility during any changeover process or when co-mingling fuels in tanks
  • Improves stability of a single fuel for storage
  • Reduction of fuel sludge, giving more fuel to burn
  • Keeps tanks and system clean
  • More homogenous fuel delivery –  better fuel injection and combustion

Since the introduction of VLSFO there have been consistent reports from the industry of high Pour Point (PP) residual fuels when compared to HSFO.

This requires a change in the way to handle and treat marine residual fuels.  Previously HSFO could be left in the tank for months, unheated with the main risk being sludge depositing in tanks over time.

The consequences of handling a high pour point fuel incorrectly are severe, ranging from fuel stratification, machinery damage, or entire storage tanks rendered unusable.  By understanding the limitations and changing our onboard practices, we can better face these new challenges.

Common HSFO issues faced by vessels using SOx scrubbers

Post combustion systems such as EGCs, EGR and SCR systems are sensitive to deposits caused by poor quality fuels or incomplete combustion, the same mechanisms that cause fouling, after-burn and black smoke in exhaust gases and/or high levels of PAH and turbidity in wash water systems.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) are organic hydrocarbons that exist in large numbers within residual marine fuels.  The primary source of PAH is incomplete combustion and unburnt fuel which normally would be expelled into the atmosphere, but are now captured by the wash water from SOx scrubbers,

PAH levels are closely monitored in scrubber wash water due to the severe damage they cause to human health and the marine environment, and for this reason the IMO stipulates that the PAH content of wash water shall not exceed 50 µg/L, a level that is often difficult to meet due to the poor combustion and fouling characteristics of HSFO.

The introduction of a powerful combustion and soot catalyst like Octamar™ Complete has the potential to address PAH by improving combustion, reduces Ignition Delay (ID), and the end of Main Combustion Delay (MCD), while increasing the Estimated Cetane Number (ECN) and reducing Particulate Matter (PM) and therefore PAH particulates by 60%.

Octamar™ Complete’s soot catalysts prevent and remove post combustion fouling for low impact protection of high performance machinery such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Exhaust Gas Economizer (EGE), SOx scrubber and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) components.
